Professor Read Montague is the founding director of the Human Neuroimaging Laboratory and the Computational Psychiatry Unit of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Center at Virginia Tech in Roanoke, USA, where he is also a professor of Physics.
In this talk, Read Montague will survey recent work on neuroeconomics, such as brain responses in people interacting with markets; neuropolitics, such as understanding the neural underpinnings of political ideology; neurolaw and neuroethics, such as the neuroscience of legally-relevant mental states, for example to determine criminal responsibility.
Montague’s work centres broadly on the neurobiology of human social cognition, decision-making, and wilful choice. He particularly focuses on computational neuroscience – the connection between the physical mechanisms in real neural tissue and the computational functions they embody.
